DTF vs. Embroidery vs. Sublimation vs. Laser Engraving: Which One Should You Choose?

You have a logo, a design or a great idea, and you want it on a shirt, a cap or a tumbler. The next question is how: printed, embroidered, sublimated or engraved? Each method looks and lasts differently, and the right choice depends on the product, the fabric and your design.

At Yuno Art, our custom shop in Katy, Texas, we work with all four methods. This guide explains how each one works, where it shines and when to pick something else.

The short answer

Method Best for Look Works on
DTF Full-color designs, photos, teams and events Bright, detailed print on top of the fabric Cotton, polyester and blends, any garment color
Embroidery Company logos, uniforms, polos and caps Stitched, textured, premium Polos, caps, jackets, heavier fabrics
Sublimation Photo mugs and full-color drinkware Ink becomes part of the surface, nothing to feel Polyester-coated items: mugs, some tumblers, light polyester fabric
Laser engraving Tumblers, metal business cards, gifts Permanent, elegant, one tone Coated metal and other hard surfaces

DTF (Direct to Film)

With DTF, your design is printed on a special film, coated with an adhesive powder and then heat-pressed onto the garment. The result is a sharp, colorful print that sits on the surface of the fabric.

Why choose DTF

  • Any number of colors. Gradients, photos and fine details print as they are.
  • Any fabric color. Bright designs look just as good on a black hoodie as on a white tee.
  • Works on most fabrics: 100% cotton, polyester and blends.
  • Great for small runs. One shirt costs about the same to set up as fifty.

Keep in mind

  • You can feel the print slightly on the fabric, especially in large solid areas.
  • Like any print, it lasts longest when washed inside out and not ironed directly.

Perfect for: birthday and family reunion shirts, team shirts, events and work shirts with colorful logos. Try it on our Essential Cotton Tee, the Gildan 18500 hoodie or the hooded performance shirt, which includes DTF on the front and back. If you press your own garments, you can also order custom DTF transfers by size and quantity, or pick a ready-to-press design sheet for $1.99.

Embroidery

Embroidery stitches your design into the fabric with thread. Before stitching, the logo is digitized: converted into a stitch file that tells the machine where each stitch goes.

Why choose embroidery

  • Professional, premium look. It is the classic choice for company uniforms.
  • Very durable. Thread does not crack or peel.
  • Texture. A stitched logo looks and feels different from a print.

Keep in mind

  • Tiny text and fine lines do not stitch well. Simple, bold logos work best.
  • Gradients and photos are not possible. Each color is a separate thread.
  • Digitizing is a one-time cost per logo. After that, reorders use the same file.

Perfect for: polos and caps for a team or business that wants a stitched look.

Order it on our embroidered polo or the embroidered dad cap, or see all our embroidery options. Want full color instead? The Premium Polo, the Classic Twill Baseball Cap and the Six Panel Custom Cap are printed with DTF.

Sublimation

Sublimation uses heat to turn special ink into a gas that bonds with a polyester coating or polyester fibers. The design becomes part of the surface instead of sitting on top of it.

Why choose sublimation

  • Vibrant, full-color results, ideal for photos.
  • Nothing to feel. The surface stays completely smooth.
  • Long-lasting on the right materials.

Keep in mind

  • It only works on polyester or polyester-coated items. It does not work on 100% cotton.
  • It needs a white or very light base. The ink is transparent, so it does not show on dark colors.

Perfect for: photo mugs and personalized gifts. See our Classic 11 oz and 15 oz mugs and the custom mugs collection.

Laser engraving

A laser removes the top coating of the material and reveals the layer underneath. The design becomes part of the object, so there is no ink that can wear off.

Why choose laser engraving

  • Permanent. It will not fade, peel or wash off.
  • Elegant. A clean, high-end look that feels like a gift.
  • Precise. Fine text and small details come out sharp.

Keep in mind

  • One tone only. The color comes from the material, not from ink.
  • It works on hard surfaces such as coated metal, not on fabric.

Perfect for: tumblers, corporate gifts and business cards that people keep. See our insulated tumbler, which offers laser engraving or full-color sublimation, and our laser-engraved metal business cards.

Which method should you choose?

  • A colorful design or a photo on a shirt or hoodie? DTF.
  • Your company logo on polos or caps for the team? Embroidery for a stitched look, or DTF for full color. See our embroidered polo.
  • A photo on a mug? Sublimation.
  • A gift that has to last forever, or a premium business card? Laser engraving.
  • A uniform with a logo on the chest and a big design on the back? DTF handles both. Our Premium Polo, hoodies and performance long sleeves can be printed on the chest and the back.
